In this debut feature from Greek-Cypriot director Minos Papas, we meet Alex Santiago (Nando Del Castillo), a photographer frustrated with life and tired of meaningless fashion shoots, who sets off to shoot his own creative work. When shooting the sunrise one morning, he looks into the sun and hurts his eyes. He starts seeing strange spots, blurs and apparitions. When he realizes that he has caught a glimpse of another dimension, Alex sets off on a journey to discover the source of his supernatural visions. His journey takes him into the dark underbelly of New York City.

Shutterbug is based on a ‘Dante’s Inferno’ concept. The protagonist journeys through various circles of hell (being Brooklyn by night!) on an odyssey… following a muse and meeting many colorful characters on the way, who in turn aid, abet, and tempt him. The film is inspired by Greek mythology, Dante’s Inferno, and life in New York.

[Shutterbug] “does not look or sound like a typical Indie film. The film looks like it was shot with a much larger budget... [The filmmakers captured] obscurity, intrigue and an underbelly world with the dark, and constructed a dreamlike sense of hope with lights and colors.”
---Sanela Djokovic, Film Monthly.

“Papas creates a haunted netherworld of lost souls... thoroughly disorienting and at times harrowing, quite impressively lit, shot and cut by Papas and his crew.”
---Joe Bendel, jbspins.blogspot.com

Saw this film at a preview screening a few weeks ago. Really cool noir-type, stuff. Locations and lighting are impressive. Great first feature.

I was astonished to learn more about the minimal cost and maximum effort dedicated to making this film. By combining lo-cost techniques and blissful imagery, the story, which is a contemporary odyssey, takes us to places the director seems to know all too well. The final scenes are breathtaking - I will definitely catch it again while it's playing on the big screen. It truly exemplifies independent cinema at its best. Keep it coming, Cinema Village.

This is a campy, "midnight feature" movie about a fashion photographer who takes to the streets of New York by night and gets a dose of reality. Guaranteed to summon up your deepest fears about New York by night. I was nervous walking down the dark streets to the subway after the show!

It reminded me of "After Hours" by Martin Scorcese, but with a lighter, more whimsical touch.

Great fun. I've recommended it to my photographer friends!
